THE GIST:

The story and brand creation behind NWÄR Skin, Inc. and my intentions for the company’s future.

MY STORY:

I get asked all of the time, why I started my own brand of skincare products and my answer is always a variation of, “There are so few professional black skincare companies.” Or, “There isn’t enough black representation in the beauty industry.” But that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the real reason as to why I started NWÄR Skin, Inc. Those statements don’t fully satisfy my intention of positioning the brand to become an authoritative voice on black and brown skin and to educate my kinfolk on various product ingredients. And quite frankly, it is my fault. I haven’t crafted an answer that fully grasps my purposes for the brand, the objective for its foreseeable future and my aspiration to inspire others to pursue their intentions.

People of color as a whole are usually society’s afterthought, a group of disenfranchised people only relevant when it counts or benefits smaller specialized groups. While this concept isn’t new and hasn’t changed much by the way of inclusion for my kinfolk, it has brought to my attention our lack of control when it comes to our narrative, our story and our existence. For too long we have been held to the standards of what society deems as fit or correct as it relates to our existence within the world. We’ve been looked over and down upon when it comes to our beauty and ultimately excluded from conversations and decisions regarding it.

NWÄR Skin, Inc. isn’t just another skincare brand that happens to service people with black and brown skin. It was created specifically to cater to this underserved, underrepresented group with the intention to educate the black consumer on product ingredients, best skincare practices for the melanin-rich and to encourage long term healthy skin. It’s the celebration and commemoration of black and brown beauty regardless of society’s aesthetic standards. It’s an effort to take back control of our image, narrative, and story as it relates to our history and our existence in the beauty industry today.

MY INTENTION:

I cannot lay claim to a difference between my intention and the brand’s purpose. Proudly the objectives for each are one and the same. I have placed myself at the center of the brand’s identity because I want to personally see to it that people of color are included in the conversation of beauty and to create a safe space for “us” to be exactly who we are, and to be free from societal judgment and the status quo.

The brand’s soul is deeply rooted in African culture and it’s founder, me, a proud black woman paying respect and homage to my ancestors all while embracing my African roots and educating my people about their skin. That, in essence, is the intention of NWÄR Skin, Inc.
